Ecological Transition and Fecam advance the strategy against plastic pollution in greenhouses

The work plan includes an inventory of farms, requirements
to owners, awareness campaigns and solutions to facilitate the

storage and use of this waste

The Ministry of Ecological Transition, Fight against Climate Change and Planning
Territorial Government of the Canary Islands and the Canarian Federation of Municipalities (Fecam) have
held this Monday, February 17, a meeting to address the problem of
plastics derived from greenhouses in the Archipelago and determine a strategy for
joint work in which city councils and island councils are involved.
Present at this first meeting were the head of the autonomous department,
José Antonio Valbuena; the president of Fecam, María Concepción Brito; and the
president of the Territorial Policy, Sustainability and Ecological Transition Commission of
the Canarian Federation of Municipalities, Ignacio Rodríguez.
The first step in this work agenda will be taken by the Government of the Canary Islands itself, through
of the Canary Islands Agency for the Protection of the Natural Environment, inspecting this type of
facilities and preparing an inventory of greenhouses to make them reach the
different municipalities.
From that moment on, the town councils will require the owners to withdraw the
plastic waste derived from this activity and its transfer to the complexes
corresponding environmental conditions. In parallel, we will work with specific managers
so that they can take advantage of these wastes and can convert them into fuel through their
treatment. Both institutions also agreed to develop different
awareness about this problem aimed at professionals in the sector.
Ultimately, José Antonio Valbuena advanced that it will be studied with the Ministry
Regional Agriculture Department the possibility of conditioning access to certain aid, in
depending on the state of conservation of the greenhouses by the owners.
