Starting this Tuesday, February 15, San Sebastián de La Gomera resumes cognitive training workshops, completely free and aimed at people over 65 years of age. This is part of the social policies implemented by the City Council, from the Department of Social Services and Equality, together with the Association of Relatives and Caregivers of Alzheimer's and Other Dementia Patients of Tenerife (AFATE), and with the support of Obra Social “La Caixa”. To register you can call the Social Services office of the City Council: 922871255, or the AFATE La Gomera telephone numbers: 639250013 / 628280708.
The Councilor for Social Services and Equality, Vanesa Vizcaíno Vera, points out that "the objective is to promote a better quality of life, promote the health and well-being of our elderly, through preventive interventions and the practice of healthy habits, in this case, through cognitive training and early stimulation."
At the same time, Vizcaíno emphasizes that this project will be carried out a new year with the Association of Relatives and Caregivers of Alzheimer's and Other Dementia Patients of Tenerife (AFATE), since "we want to continue advancing together with this association, which works daily both on preventive interventions, as well as on patient care and the important support it provides to families. As well as on raising awareness about Alzheimer's and other dementias."
In this sense, the schedule established for carrying out the workshops covers: Tuesdays from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., at the Youth Center. Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., at the La Gallarda Social Center. And on Thursdays from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at the 'Iballa' Senior Citizens Center.
It is worth highlighting the importance of cognitive training, since it prevents and detects cognitive alterations and/or dementia in time. This is an activity intended for any audience due to its numerous benefits. Although it is usually aimed at older people with a normal aging process and those with mild cognitive impairment or in situations of mild dementia.
Some of the benefits of this project, framed in a cycle of preventive stimulation workshops, include: improved attention, memory or processing speed, improved language, decreased stress, greater connection with the environment, increased self-esteem and personal autonomy.
