Rodríguez: “We are going to demand and we are going to be able to exempt the Canary Islands from the flying tax”

The Vice-President of the Government indicates that, in any case, the rejection of this figure does not contradict the need to reflect on green taxation in the Canary Islands

The Vice President of the Canarian Government and Minister of Finance, Budgets and European Affairs, Román Rodríguez, said today in Parliament that "we are going to demand and we are going to get the Archipelago to be exempt from the tax on flights" proposed by the Central Executive.

In responses to the parliamentary groups of Ciudadanos and Nueva Canarias, the vice president said that "we will not let our guard down and we will be attentive so that this tax figure does not limit our rights or undermine the regulatory and legal coverage that safeguards our specificities."

Likewise, he added that the Executive will be aware that there will be no changes in the 75 percent compensation for the transport of goods and people.

Rodriguez explained that "the risks are not dissipated in the European Union" and that although in the continental area this tax proposal makes sense to promote a more sustainable and less polluting development model, in the Canary Islands it is not possible since there are no alternatives to the plane, as there are there, in reference to rail transport.

Precisely, the vice president disassociated the rejection of the application of this tax on flights to the Canary Islands from the need to reflect on green taxation in the Archipelago, an issue "that we must face because it will also be a value for our visitors."

"There is no contradiction between one position and another; moreover," he continued, "green taxes will be imposed in the world, in Europe, in Spain and in the Canary Islands to fight the climate crisis."

"Each tax figure must take into account a social, geographical and economic context, which means that the tax on flights, for example, is not possible in the Canary Islands, but we must address others that allow us to advance in decarbonization and neutrality of greenhouse gas emissions," Rodriguez said.
