The event will take place on November 27, 28 and 29 in St. Peter's Square, with free admission
Casa África organizes this edition in collaboration with the Cabildo of La Gomera and the Valle Gran Rey City Council
On November 27, 28 and 29, La Gomera hosts the fifth edition of Africa Week, a cultural meeting that invites you to discover the richness and diversity of the African continent through free activities aimed at all audiences. The program, which will take place in the Plaza de San Pedro in Valle Gran Rey, includes storytelling sessions, dance and percussion workshops, African music and a gastronomic space dedicated to Senegalese cuisine, consolidating this event as one of the cultural references of autumn on the island.
The initiative, organized by Casa África with the collaboration of the Cabildo of La Gomera and the Valle Gran Rey City Council, aims to bring the island public closer to a plural, positive and contemporary vision of Africa, moving away from stereotypes and promoting greater mutual knowledge between the Canary Islands and the neighboring continent. Since its first edition in 2021, Africa Week has become a meeting space that celebrates oral tradition, artistic creation and African cultural diversity.
On Thursday, November 27, Bonaí Capote and María Buenadicha will open the program with a storytelling session based on stories and songs from the African oral tradition, especially from Cameroon, Nigeria and the island of Bioko. On Friday the 28th, a dance and percussion workshop will be held by the Thioune Brothers, renowned Senegalese masters who will introduce the public to traditional West African rhythms to the rhythm of live drums and kora. The day on Saturday the 29th will be dedicated to flavor and rhythm, with a gastronomic corner of typical Senegalese dishes - such as chicken yassa, couscous or bissap - and a final concert by the Thioune Brothers and their band, who fuse traditional percussion, Afrobeat, flamenco and Canarian melodies in a proposal full of energy and color.
The Minister of Culture of the Cabildo of La Gomera, Rosa Elena García, highlighted that "Africa Week has become an essential event in our cultural calendar. It allows us to get closer to creativity, oral tradition, music and African gastronomy from a close, respectful and plural perspective. From the Cabildo we continue to support projects that build bridges between cultures and enrich the cultural life of La Gomera."
The Councilor for Culture of the Valle Gran Rey City Council, Carlos González, stressed that “our municipality is proud to host an event that contributes to broadening the cultural perspective of our neighbors, bringing us closer to the enormous artistic and human wealth of the African continent.”
Likewise, he highlighted that "Africa Week is an opportunity to learn, share and enjoy in community, and from the City Council we will continue to support initiatives that promote cultural diversity and reinforce the cultural offer of Valle Gran Rey."
