Hermigua celebrates International Women's Day with multiple activities

Music, stories of emigration or empowerment, keys to the intense week of events

On March 8, International Women's Day is celebrated and the Hermigua City Council has scheduled a series of events that, throughout this week, will promote the challenges of equality through music, stories about emigration or talks on female empowerment.

In this way, it will be the 'Gara' Women's Association who will take to the lectern of the Convent's Cultural Hall this Wednesday to offer a talk titled “Why can't I do it?” It will take place at 5:30 p.m. and seeks to bring to light the value and capacity that all women have to improve themselves.

Already on Thursday, Hermigua will receive a visit from one of her most illustrious daughters, the writer Isabel Medina, who will receive recognition for her literary career. This event, organized by the Island Council and with the collaboration of the City Council, will take place at 6:00 p.m. at the Antiguo Casino Sociocultural Center.

One of the main events will take place on Friday, as the public will be able to watch the documentary “The White Widows: the other side of Canarian emigration to Venezuela” at 7:30 p.m. at the Antiguo Casino Sociocultural Center. "This event will have the presence of one of the directors, so we are convinced that it will be possible to hold an interesting discussion on that other, less known and, of course, less friendly side of emigration, such as those women who suffered in silence the absence of their husbands and who had to support their families alone," advances the head of Social Services, Encarna Herrera.

Finally, on Saturday, March 7, prior to International Women's Day, there will be workshops and sports activities starting at 6:00 p.m. in the Plaza de La Encarnación, all with the special accompaniment of DJ SET, who will offer a very special session for this day. Likewise, the Manifesto for Women's Day will be read.
