The deputy of the Socialist Parliamentary Group for La Gomera, Ventura del Carmen Rodríguez, asks the Government about the measures planned to address the demands of the sector, and announces that the main agricultural organizations will appear in the Parliament's Agriculture Commission at the request of the PSOE to address the current situation
Canary Islands, March 10, 2020.- The deputy of the Socialist Parliamentary Group for La Gomera, Ventura del Carmen Rodríguez, has demanded today Tuesday [11] in the Plenary Session of Parliament from all political parties for more “political unity” to seek solutions to the “legitimate demands” of the agricultural sector in the Canary Islands, which have announced different mobilizations during this month of March to demand fair prices in their production and improvements in the sector.
The socialist deputy, who asked the Government of the Canary Islands about the measures planned to address these demands, assured that the Socialist Parliamentary Group shares their demands and announced in this sense that the main agricultural organizations of the islands will appear in the Agriculture Commission of the Canary Islands Parliament in the next sessions to address this situation in depth, at the request of the PSOE. “What we ask of all political groups is unity to seek solutions and join in proposals, especially those who have been governing until yesterday.”
Along these lines, Rodríguez pointed out that these are "legitimate" demands that "have been dragging on for years, although some of the Canarian Coalition (CC) seem to find out now, when they have governed and directed this matter in the last 30 years in the Canary Islands. This is not a crisis that has been generated in the last 8 months of the socialist government, this crisis comes from behind, it is European and great solutions will have to be sought, with all political parties lending a shoulder."
The deputy recalled that in response to these claims, the Government of the Canary Islands has held constant meetings with the sector of the islands, and that for its part, the Government of Spain “has urgently come out to take measures that serve to respond to these demands.
Likewise, he emphasized these claims, such as compliance with the food chain through the State's modification of this Law "proposing fair prices and profitable margins, and forcing production costs to be taken into account." Furthermore, he highlighted that in the sector's request for the maintenance of European aid, the Spanish Government "is defending a fair Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), and also defends the position of the outermost regions (ORP) such as the Canary Islands."
