The Cabildo and the San Sebastián City Council sign an agreement to renew the street furniture on Avenida de Los Descubridores

The action, integrated into the 'Ruta Colombina' project, contemplates the improvement of the section between the public area outside the local town hall and the children's playground attached to the beach area

The investment allocated to this intervention amounts to 180,000 euros and is part of a global project of more than one million euros to highlight the historical connection of La Gomera with the Discovery of America

The Cabildo of La Gomera and the City Council of San Sebastián de La Gomera have signed a specific collaboration agreement to carry out the action to improve the street furniture on Avenida de Los Descubridores, between the public area outside the local town hall and the children's playground attached to the beach area.

This intervention, which involves an investment of 180,000 euros financed by the Cabildo, is part of the 'Columbian Route' project, an initiative that exceeds one million euros of investment and which aims to highlight the historical link of the island with the Discovery of America and reinforce its tourist and cultural attractiveness.

The president of the Cabildo of La Gomera, Casimiro Curbelo, highlighted the importance of this action to continue advancing in the improvement of public spaces linked to the historical heritage of the island capital. “The Columbian Route is a strategic project for La Gomera because it allows us to recover and dignify urban spaces linked to our history, while reinforcing the cultural and tourist offer of San Sebastián as a key point in the story of the Columbian journey,” he said.

Curbelo stressed that the renewal of street furniture will contribute to creating a more careful environment consistent with the historical value of the promenade. “With this action, new urban elements such as benches, trash cans or lighting will be incorporated that will improve the functionality and aesthetics of this avenue, also favoring its integration within the historical itinerary of the Columbian Route,” he added.

For her part, the mayor of San Sebastián de La Gomera, Angélica Padilla, positively valued the collaboration between both administrations to continue promoting urban improvement projects in the capital. "This agreement allows us to continue advancing in the transformation and beautification of one of the busiest spaces in the municipality, improving the quality of the urban environment and reinforcing its connection with the historical heritage linked to the passage of Christopher Columbus through the island," he noted.

Padilla highlighted that this intervention will contribute to consolidating Avenida de Los Descubridores as a walking and meeting space for residents and visitors. “We continue to work in coordination with the Cabildo to improve the image of the capital and enhance its historical and cultural value within the island as a whole,” he added.

Actions within the Ruta Colombina project

The first vice president and counselor of the Interior Regime and Insular Heritage, Adasat Reyes, explained that the improvement of the street furniture on Avenida de Los Descubridores is integrated into the demonstration project for the creation of a tourist product 'Colombina Route in San Sebastián de La Gomera', promoted by the Cabildo and financed with European funds from the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (Next Generation EU).

“In addition to this action, progress is already being made in other interventions aimed at improving the urban image and reinforcing the historical interpretation of the municipality, such as the renovation and homogenization of awnings and facades in the historic center, the creation of two monuments and two murals dedicated to this historical milestone, the incorporation of new interpretive signage, and the musealization of emblematic spaces such as the Casa Colón, the Torre del Conde and the Pozo de la Aguada,” he added.

Likewise, Reyes referred to the fact that, within this program of actions, the installation of sculptural works linked to the Columbian Route is included, the first of which has already begun, in the roundabout of the San Sebastián Municipal Market, which gives access to the historic center of the town.
