The Cabildo allocates 350 thousand euros for the rehabilitation and accessibility of homes

The insular Institution and Provivienda renew this program that allows work to be undertaken such as the renovation of bathrooms to eliminate architectural barriers, make the entrance to homes accessible and solve humidity problems.

Curbelo insists that this action allows greater autonomy for users, easing the burden on municipal social services, home help staff, and family members and non-professional caregivers.

The Cabildo of La Gomera allocates, for this year 2026, 350 thousand euros for the rehabilitation and accessibility of homes on the island. Thus, the insular Institution and Provivienda renew the program started last year, and which allows work to be undertaken such as the renovation of bathrooms to eliminate architectural barriers, make the entrance to the homes accessible and solve humidity problems.

The president of the Cabildo, Casimiro Curbelo, insisted that "this project provides continuity to the work carried out by both entities during 2025, which in its previous phase already allowed the adaptation of 22 homes with the forecast of incorporating 30 more in this year." Thus, he pointed out that the objective remains the same, "which is none other than to transform Goro homes into safe and functional spaces so that elderly or dependent people can continue living in their usual home with the highest possible quality of life."

For her part, the insular Minister of Social Policy, Rosa Elena García, emphasized that "this program is a fundamental tool so that our elderly people are not forced to leave their homes due to lack of adequate conditions." “By improving accessibility, the autonomy of the elderly in their own municipality is reinforced, avoiding uprooting and improving their social integration,” he added.

The actions financed by this program focus on the elimination of physical barriers. Among the most common renovations are the adaptation of the bathrooms and the improvement of accessibility in the entrances and rooms of the home. These reforms not only facilitate mobility, but also prevent risks of domestic accidents and improve the daily well-being of beneficiaries.

Provivienda is the entity in charge of executing the program, carrying out work that combines technical intervention with social support. The process begins with a diagnosis of the needs of each home and a study of the elderly person's situation, ensuring that the reforms adapt to their specific mobility difficulties.
