The Cabildo of La Gomera has formalized its support for the candidacy of Radio ECCA, Fundación Canaria, for the Princess of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities 2026, in recognition of its outstanding educational and social work carried out for more than six decades.

The insular Institution values the contribution of Radio ECCA as a reference in the use of communication in the service of education, especially among the most vulnerable groups, as well as its capacity to promote equal opportunities and universal access to knowledge.

The president of the Cabildo of La Gomera, Casimiro Curbelo, highlighted that “Radio ECCA represents an extraordinary example of how education can transform lives and societies, especially when it is put at the service of those who need it most.” Likewise, he added that "her career amply supports this candidacy, having been a pioneer in the use of radio as an educational tool and maintaining a firm commitment to human dignity and social cohesion."

The entity has developed an innovative pedagogical model - the so-called ECCA System - that combines teaching materials, recorded classes and tutorial support, managing to train millions of people throughout its history. This approach has been internationally recognized for its effectiveness and its ability to adapt to different cultural and social contexts.

Curbelo also emphasized the global dimension of the organization: “The international reach of Radio ECCA, with presence in Europe, Africa and Latin America, demonstrates the solidity of a project that has managed to evolve without losing its essence: guaranteeing access to education as a fundamental right.”

The accession of the Cabildo of La Gomera adds to the support of other public institutions and social entities that recognize in Radio ECCA an exemplary model of communication at the service of the humanities, as well as a key instrument for human development and social inclusion.
