Angélica Padilla highlights the usefulness of this measure that contributes to the professionalization and training of farmers, as well as citizens interested in participating in the initiative.
The Cabildo of La Gomera, through the Ministry of Primary Sector and Rural Development, promotes the holding of training sessions on mango and avocado production. This measure is framed within the planning for the professionalization and training of the sector with a view to increasing its competitiveness.
As explained by the counselor, Angélica Padilla, the training is approached to each of the municipalities with the aim of facilitating the participation of interested parties, especially farmers and ranchers. “We have designed a program designed to reach more people and address the treatment of two of the products with the greatest marketing demand,” he reported.
The training calendar begins next Monday, March 16, in the Assembly Hall of the Youth Center of San Sebastián de La Gomera, starting at 5:00 p.m. On Tuesday the 17th it will be Hermigua's turn at the House of Culture. One day later, on Wednesday the 18th, the training moves to Agulo at the Casa Pintor José Aguiar. On Thursday the 19th at the Vallehermoso House of Culture; on Friday the 20th in the Assembly Hall of the Alajeró City Council; and closes the program on Monday the 23rd at the Valle Gran Rey House of Culture.
Registration for the course can be done through the Island Council website – lagomera.es – or at 922.140.185. It is necessary to complete this prior procedure to participate in any of the six scheduled sessions.
The cultivation of avocado and mango on the island is mainly located in areas with abundant hours of sunshine and sheltered from the wind. Due to their high production, they are species with high potential to prevent soil loss in risk areas.
Promotion of fruit products from La Gomera
Along with the training, the insular Institution has started different promotional campaigns for these products in spaces with maximum traffic. The first of them took place in the celebration of the carnivals of Santa Cruz de Tenerife with the dissemination of more than 30,000 leaflets and the placement of advertising billboards on the manga and the avocado.
These actions are financed through the nominal subsidy granted to the Cabildo by the Department of Agriculture of the Government of the Canary Islands, endowed with 50,000 euros, for the training, promotion and dissemination of the manga and the Gomero avocado.
