The City Council demands greater clarification from the State regarding the possible arrival of boats to La Gomera

The Government Group recalls that three meetings have been held in recent months with the Island Delegation without progress being made to clarify this issue.

The City Council of San Sebastián de La Gomera demands greater clarity from the State regarding the possible arrival of boats to La Gomera. And on three occasions in recent months there have been meetings between the Insular Directorate and the group of insular Institutions, without progress to date having been made until today, we find ourselves at the same starting point with a request for possible locations received in writing just a week ago.

In this sense, the City Council has expressed in all meetings our full willingness to collaborate to try to avoid the painful image that would entail placing tents on the dock, designed exclusively for attention upon arrival, due to not having a location with habitable conditions planned. This would avoid prolonged stays in places planned for only a few hours, as is happening in other parts of the Canary Islands at the moment.

All of this, when there has been time to do correct planning and define a protocol for the port of San Sebastián de La Gomera that allows it to be activated at any time and offer adequate care to migrants, in addition to a correct health protocol in the event that someone could be infected by Covid-19.

Likewise, they remember that one of the possible locations could be the State itself, specifically the Military Barracks owned by the Ministry of Defense in the La Lomada area and that it could be perfectly valid since, with a minimal reform of some of its facilities, it would allow its use as soon as possible.

Along with this, they point out that the current situation derived from Covid-19 has caused a change in the use needs of a greater number of properties that, under normal conditions, could be feasible for a temporary location such as the sports center, so they are committed to evaluating other options that could start from a new building that would serve multiple uses and that should be financed by the State itself.

Finally, they point out that the arrival of a boat can be immediate, so we have the obligation to be prepared to avoid last-minute improvisations, especially in the health alert situation in which we find ourselves and where control of the situation is essential.
