The San Sebastián City Council intensifies the management of social aid

The Town Hall serves more than 100 users with daily home help and soup kitchen services.

The City Council of San Sebastián de La Gomera has intensified the management of social aid following the high demand produced in the municipality after the outbreak of the COVD-19 crisis, a situation that has led the City Council to serve more than 100 users with daily home help and soup kitchen services.

The mayor of San Sebastián, Adasat Reyes, indicates that the figures speak for themselves and do so about a complex situation "but one in which we are working tirelessly, to the point of having assisted more than 300 people by telephone."

In this sense, it indicates a change in trend detected, because while before many queries had to do with issues of licenses or administrative procedures, "the reality is that the majority of users ask for direct aid, and this is explained because there are needs that we must face and neighbors who need more than ever to have a nearby administration such as the City Council."

The mayor also explains another particularity detected and it has to do with a slight decrease in home help undoubtedly caused by the fear of contagion, "so users now make other types of demands and aid; it has been a complete change in the map of social services," he asserts. “Still, we continue to follow up to make sure everything is covered.”

Reyes also reports that the City Council has already processed nearly twenty direct aid, as well as the acquisition for the delivery of hygiene and food kits for an amount close to 10,000 euros. Along with this, and due to COVID-19, an expense of 20,000 euros is incurred for the acquisition of protective materials and equipment for the staff themselves.

“From the City Council of San Sebastián de La Gomera we are clear that at this time the highest priority is the most vulnerable neighbors who need us to be with them, because unemployment, uncertainty and personal circumstances are different and that is why we are adapting individually to reach those who demand the most from us,” he concludes.
