The president of the Cabildo of La Gomera insists on the blockade suffered by the Port
of Los Cristianos, “an infrastructure that is not made to support more than 1.8
million passengers and more than 400 thousand vehicles a year”
Appeals for a unanimous response from all administrations to begin the
project as soon as possible
The president of the Cabildo of La Gomera, Casimiro Curbelo, insisted, this Friday, on the
unity of the Canary Islands public administrations to unblock the construction of the
Port of Fonsalía. This was stated within the framework of a Forum on Connectivity and Tourism
held in the south of Tenerife.
Curbelo demanded speed and a firm response to “a vital infrastructure for the islands.”
Westerners, which would mark economic development, based on better connections and
traffic capacity between them." For these reasons, he regretted that it takes more than half
century in responding to this demand, “putting equal opportunities at risk
in a fragmented territory, which needs cohesion mechanisms like this
port".
He recalled that the infrastructure is declared to be of exceptional public interest,
in addition to being collected in the Transinsular Transport Axis of the Canary Islands, approved
by the autonomous government in 2006. “Now what is needed is to provide it with financing
and that the State assigns the public domain of the port area to the Canary Islands,” he noted.
He reiterated the deficiencies of the Port of Los Cristianos, which supports more than 1,800,000
passengers and more than 400,000 vehicles a year, positioning itself as the port of the
province that registers the highest regular passenger traffic. “Those of us who live in
Gomera, La Palma or El Hierro, we know what it means to endure delays in
connections or spend more than an hour on just 5 kilometers of track, which separate the
highway facilities, a situation that is becoming increasingly unsustainable.”
Maximum prices and more control of the resident discount
He insisted on setting maximum prices and exercising greater control over the
increase in prices, following the entry into force of the 75% discount on the
resident transportation. This was stated, together with the presidents of the councils of Tenerife
and El Hierro.
"Here control has failed and now mechanisms must be in place to correct it. Without
forget, the incorporation of maximum prices that reduce the inequalities that
We citizens of the islands suffer, having only the boat and the plane to be able to
move,” he explained before remembering that with the increase in the bonus in 2018,
They have chained price increases of up to 24%.
The island leader detailed his commitment to incorporating the vehicle into the bonus,
so that, as happens with passengers, the cost is reduced in the same
percentage. “When we move between islands we always use the vehicle, so
There is a real demand for the discount to also have an impact on what
We consider it our travel luggage,” he said.
Curbelo asks the Canary Islands to participate in Aena
In terms of air connectivity, he pointed to the “necessary” incorporation of
Canarian representation on the Board of Directors of AENA. “The decisions that
taken in this body affect the Canary Islands and our opinion is important before
“Decisions affect strategic infrastructure for the connectivity of the islands.”
