The general secretary of ASG highlights the experience, qualifications and management capacity of Castilla, whose candidacy for the Senate received the unanimous support of the formation, while recognizing the extraordinary work carried out by Fabián Chinea in the Upper House during the last seven years
Yaiza Castilla is committed to defending social rights, housing, public services and differentiated treatment for the Canary Islands and, especially, the non-capital islands.
La Gomera, October 19. The general secretary of the Gomera Socialist Group (ASG), Casimiro Curbelo, assured this Monday that his party has opted for “the best candidate” to represent La Gomera in the Senate, Yaiza Castilla, who highlighted her institutional experience, her preparation and her ability to defend the interests of the Island and the Canary Islands in the face of the important political, economic and social challenges of the coming years.
During the presentation of the candidacy, held at the ASG headquarters in San Sebastián de La Gomera, Curbelo stressed that Spain needs stability and the Canary Islands need representatives prepared to face a particularly demanding scenario. "The challenges in the coming years for the Canary Islands are extraordinary. Therefore, the candidates, both for the Senate and the Congress of Deputies, have to be the best," he stated.
In this sense, he highlighted the trajectory of Castilla, who already served as senator for La Gomera between 2016 and 2019 and subsequently assumed the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce of the Government of the Canary Islands until 2023. "Yaiza Castilla is a very qualified person. We have complete confidence in her," he stated.
The ASG leader recalled that his appointment was unanimous, after listening to the local assemblies and the decision of the formation's executive committee. In his opinion, his knowledge of the functioning of institutions and his experience in public responsibilities constitute guarantees to face a stage in which it will be necessary to strengthen the defense of the interests of La Gomera in State decisions.
The candidacy will also be made up of Fabián Chinea, current ASG senator for La Gomera, and Guacimara Barrera, as substitutes.
Defense of social rights and Canarian singularities
For her part, Yaiza Castilla expressed her commitment to putting all her experience, knowledge and vocation for public service at the service of La Gomera and the Canary Islands, with the aim of achieving better measures and budgets that have a direct impact on the well-being of citizens.
“I only conceive of one way of representing the people: defending the interests of La Gomera and the Canary Islands,” he said, while expressing his willingness to redouble efforts to respond to the great challenges of the new political stage.
Yaiza Castilla warned of the importance of avoiding setbacks in social rights and placed among her main priorities the defense of public health and education, pensions adequate to the cost of living and access to decent housing.
Likewise, he stressed the need to preserve the Economic and Fiscal Regime (REF) of the Canary Islands and guarantee that state policies take into account the particularities of the outermost regions and the specific needs of the non-capital islands, especially the Green Islands.
The candidate highlighted the role of the Senate as a chamber of territorial representation, from which it is possible to incorporate into state legislation the singularities of territories such as La Gomera, which require responses adapted to their reality.
“I am going to combine all those previous experiences, knowledge and put all my public vocation and all the love I have for La Gomera and also the Canary Islands,” said Castilla, convinced that joint work will allow us to achieve measures and budgets that contribute to improving the living conditions of citizens.
