Chinea manages to include the promotion of rural women in a motion on the 8M approved by the Senate

  • The senator highlights that it is vital that the role of rural women be promoted as part of the Government's strategy regarding the demographic challenge
  • Chinea: "The fight continues. And I am convinced that next Sunday we will witness a new triumph of the feminist movement against those who now try to make us return to the past"
La Gomera, March 4, 2020. The senator for the island of La Gomera, Fabián Chinea Correa, managed to include the promotion of the role of rural women in a motion on equality between women and men approved by the plenary session of the Upper House in the session held this morning. The motion was presented by the Socialist Group on the occasion of the upcoming commemoration of “International Women's Day”, which will be celebrated on March 8.
Fabián Chinea considers that promoting the protagonism of women in the rural world is a fundamental axis that the Government must prioritize in its strategy regarding the demographic challenge and in all those actions it promotes to promote the recovery of agricultural activity.
The senator from the Gomera Socialist Group highlighted during his speech that "we are at the gates of a new 8M. The fight continues. And I am convinced that next Sunday we will witness a new triumph of the feminist movement against those who now try to make us return to the past."
Chinea also tried to ensure that the initiative signed by the PSOE also included free education from 0 to 3 years old to promote family conciliation, full equality in the Sports Law and that the gender perspective be accentuated in the fight against climate change. However, these three proposals were not accepted by the socialists.
The senator argued that "moving towards universal, free and public coverage of schooling from 0 to 3 years is a demand that we must all assume to improve work-family conciliation. When we talk about universality we are not referring to obligation, but to enabling a service that all families who want can have access to, without being conditioned by economic resources."
Regarding full gender equality in Sports, he indicated that "it is a challenge that the previous Government tried to carry out, but the calling of elections frustrated the processing of the bill. Although women's sports are gaining ground in relevant tournaments, they have not yet achieved the recognition they deserve. And to eliminate the gap, the future Sports Law must aspire to guarantee the equality of women, marginalized by the 1990 law, an obsolete text that needs to be updated. to adapt it to the new social reality.”
