The Cabildo presents the new agenda of actions for the promotion of island crafts

The Ministry of Crafts programs a dozen measures with which to promote marketing and address training with schools

Miguel Melo advances the celebration of two craft fairs and exhibitions in each of the municipalities, in addition to participation in regional events

This Thursday, the Cabildo of La Gomera presented the agenda of actions to promote island crafts. A program designed by the Ministry of Crafts and that is in line with the marketing and dissemination objectives of the sector that brings together more than 120 professionals from twenty different trades, who every year join the proposals promoted.

The most important events are once again the two editions of the Insular Crafts Fair. This year, according to the counselor, Miguel Melo, the first will be held in the month of July in Vallehermoso coinciding with its Lustral Festivals, while the second date will be in November in the island capital, San Sebastián. “We are committed to scaling these two events that already have great acceptance, both from the public and from artisans from other parts of the Canary Islands,” he explained.

The fairs are joined by craft samples that return to each of the municipalities with the aim of offering small showcases of the most unique crafts, creating points of sale in spaces with a high influx of visitors when coinciding with popular festivities or other events. “We are deciding dates based on two premises: coordination with the artisans and the guarantee of having locations with a lot of traffic,” he noted.

Craft experiences with the youngest are added to the samples and fairs. Measures aimed at schools in which students will be trained in craft techniques, based on the instructions of master craftsmen. On this occasion, this action will have the cooperation of the Biosphere Reserve, within its Strategic Plan. “It is a new opportunity to bring crafts closer to new generations, since they are the guarantee for their survival, from learning and the responsibility of safeguarding these heritage elements,” said Melo.
