La Gomera approves the third cycle of its Hydrological Plan

La Gomera approves the third cycle of its Hydrological Plan

The Island Council gives the provisional green light to this planning that will be valid until 2027, in addition to the second cycle of the Flood Risk Management Plan

Curbelo highlights the roadmap marked on the island to advance this island strategy that allows the materialization of measures aimed at optimizing water resources and the provision of hydraulic infrastructures.

The Cabildo of La Gomera has provisionally approved the third cycle of its Hydrological Plan and the second cycle of the Flood Risk Management Plan. This has been agreed by the plenary session of the Corporation, which concluded with the processing of both documents that outline the strategies in the island area for this purpose, with the aim of addressing the challenges in terms of water resources and hydraulic infrastructures.

The provision of this planning places the island in “a good position” regarding the planning and organization of the measures to be adopted to face the consequences of climate change, minimizing its impact on society and the territory, explained the island president, Casimiro Curbelo, who valued the work of the technical teams, entities and citizens that have been part of the process.

Thus, the Hydrological Plan document focuses on the roadmap to promote efficient management in terms of reducing losses in the network and the provision of infrastructure that allows meeting the demand for water, both for human consumption and for the agricultural sector. In this way, Curbelo explained that progress has been made in the provision of material resources, starting from the materialization of desolation stations in three municipalities, which will be complemented with new treatment plants in other points.

“It is about continuing on the path of having more water resources, and advancing in the use of treated water, linking them to agricultural use and public spaces to which their usefulness is adjusted,” said the president. In this same sense, in relation to the desolation plants, he recalled that although they are located in three points of the island, the water they generate can be pumped to any point in the network.

Lines of action

La Gomera's hydrological planning for the next six-year period focuses on the fight against climate change with initiatives aimed at improving purification, increasing resources for water collection and desalination projects. Likewise, measures to reduce pollution in agricultural areas will be reinforced by reviewing these areas and establishing control networks.

Regarding resource management, efforts will continue to optimize control in networks and tanks, and the adaptation of discharge pipes, while in terms of flood management, self-protection strategies will be reinforced.
