The Cabildo finalizes the youth employment program after carrying out twenty environmental actions

The insular Institution takes stock of this pioneering initiative that comes to an end after facilitating the labor insertion of unemployed young people who have received training on reforestation measures, restoration of degraded areas and efficiency of water infrastructure

Curbelo highlights the usefulness of these dual training and employment programs to promote first job opportunities

The Cabildo of La Gomera took stock, this Thursday, of the youth employment program dedicated to cooperating with actions on sustainability, ecological transition and the fight against climate change that has been developed since last January. This initiative, to which 391 thousand euros have been allocated in cooperation with the Canarian Employment Service, has allowed twenty young people to enter the labor market.

During the execution of the program, they have carried out actions aimed at promoting the reforestation of native species and the fight against invasive flora, based on repopulation and restoration tasks of degraded areas in the south of the island. According to the president, Casimiro Curbelo, these measures allow us to advance the objectives of a sustainable economy.

In this sense, he emphasized the positive impact that dual training and employment programs have on the economic fabric, especially for job placement and training in strategic sectors such as the environment. In this way, he said that a double function is achieved: creating employment and contributing to the fight against climate change.

Likewise, he recalled that this program has not been the only one launched in the last eight months, since the Cabildo has promoted two more initiatives with the hiring of more than fifty young people to carry out tasks related to public administration, which has meant an overall investment of more than one million euros.

Practical learning

During this time, the members of the program have carried out protection tasks against herbivores in already established thermophilic plantations, along with the expansion of the plantation areas. In addition, they have carried out repopulation actions with more than 500 specimens. Regarding the optimization of hydraulic infrastructure, they have carried out the cleaning of weeds in the drinking water supply network and the detection of leaks.
