ASG requests Social Welfare to complete the financing of two key projects for La Gomera

ASG solicita a Bienestar Social completar la financiación de dos proyectos clave para La Gomera

The president of the Gomera Socialist Group (ASG) Parliamentary Group, Melodie Mendoza, has assessed the growth of the budget of the Ministry of Social Welfare, Equality, Youth, Children and Families for 2027 and has announced that her group will propose during the budget processing measures to advance two priority actions for La Gomera: the Vallehermoso minor center and the socio-health center in the north of the island.

The Ministry's accounts amount to 1,034.98 million euros, 197.24 million more than in 2026, which represents an increase of 23.54%. Melodie Mendoza also highlighted that structural resources have increased by 60.9% since the beginning of the legislature, going from 642.51 to 1,033.68 million euros. “We positively value the growth of your budget for the year 2027,” he stated, and pointed out that the area's policies directly affect the living conditions of many Canarian families.

The main budgetary effort is concentrated on dependency, whose general direction will have 567.15 million euros, 177.65 million more than the previous year. Melodie Mendoza considered this reinforcement necessary to meet the recognized benefits and continue improving the system's response.

In disability, he highlighted the increase in the program contract, which went from 1.45 to 4.32 million euros, as well as the continuity of the comprehensive early care plan. In his opinion, it is a priority to improve assessment procedures and guarantee that specialized care reaches all the islands.

The president of the ASG Parliamentary Group also highlighted the consolidation of its own general direction for older people, with 20.94 million euros, and the development of the Maresía framework, aimed at promoting active aging and combating unwanted loneliness. He stressed the importance of strengthening proximity services and home care on islands with an older and more dispersed population.

The childhood and family budget grows by 20%, to 125.52 million euros, with an orientation that Melodie Mendoza highlighted for its attention to prevention, family intervention and warded minors. In the fight against poverty and social exclusion, 113.33 million are maintained for the Canarian Citizenship Income and the annual supplement of 400 euros for some 43,000 non-contributory pensions. He also asked to improve coordination with city councils and employment services to promote inclusion itineraries.

Two priority actions for La Gomera

Among the amendments that ASG will present, Melodie Mendoza pointed out the financing of the Vallehermoso juvenile center, whose total cost amounts to 1.39 million euros. The group proposes to maintain the 600,000 euros allocated in 2026 and incorporate approximately the remaining 790,000 euros in 2027 to complete the resources necessary to execute the action.

The second proposal refers to the social health center in the north of La Gomera. Melodie Mendoza asked to transfer the amounts planned in 2026 to 2027 and set up a multi-year agreement that allows the Government to program and commit the total necessary financing. “They are two very important projects for our island,” he said.

The parliamentarian indicated that ASG will present its proposals with a willingness to agree and thanked the Ministry for its willingness to advance the improvement of social services in La Gomera and in the Canary Islands as a whole.
