ASG demands that the budgetary effort in Health and Universities reach patients and students on all the islands

ASG reclama que el esfuerzo presupuestario en Sanidad y Universidades llegue a pacientes y estudiantes de todas las islas

The deputy spokesperson for the Gomera Socialist Group Parliamentary Group (ASG), Jesús Ramos, has positively assessed the Health and Universities budget projects for 2027, although he has demanded that the increase in resources translate into concrete improvements for the population of all the islands.

In his interventions in the Budget and Finance Committee of the Parliament of the Canary Islands, he focused on territorial cohesion, access to public services and the specific needs of La Gomera.

Universities: stable funding and opportunities on all islands

The budget of Universities amounts to 438.1 million euros, 13.6 million more than in 2026, an increase of 3.21%. Ramos highlighted that the financing of public universities reaches 301.6 million, but noted that real investments and capital transfers decrease by almost 6.5 million. For this reason, he called for paying more attention to investment and moving towards structural financing that gives stability and predictability to academic institutions.

“Regardless of where we live, regardless of our zip code, we should all be able to have access to culture, to studies,” he defended. Along these lines, he valued the increase in university financing and the development of a new model for the period 2027-2030, which makes it possible to cover structural expenses and plan long-term projects.

The deputy spokesperson for the ASG Parliamentary Group also warned of the importance of aid for those who study outside their island. University scholarships remain at 11.06 million euros, while transport aid drops by one million, to 700,000 euros. Ramos proposed recovering that amount during budget processing, considering that travel, accommodation and maintenance represent a special effort for students from non-capital islands. Likewise, he pointed out the reduction from 34,889 to 29,889 euros for the UNED extensions in La Gomera and El Hierro.

In terms of research, he highlighted the 5.2 million allocated to research human capital, 28% more, and defended extending opportunities for innovation and qualified employment to non-capital islands.

Health: proximity, personnel and medical transportation

Health accounts reach 5,246 million euros, with an increase of 412 million. Ramos asked that this growth improve care on each island and contribute to decentralizing health services. “We need to have increasingly better health centers and better island hospitals,” he stated, highlighting the advances in specialties and diagnostic means in La Gomera, which avoid traveling to Tenerife.

Personnel expenses rise to 2,873 million, 253 million more. For Ramos, it is necessary to improve working conditions and retain health professionals in the Canary Islands. He also defended strengthening Primary Care, especially in territories with dispersed populations and orographic difficulties, and highlighted the need to expand ambulance coverage and reduce response times in remote areas.

The planned investment in health infrastructure is 142.2 million euros. Among the actions for La Gomera, Ramos valued the multipurpose day hospital, endowed with 1.3 million, for its potential to expand benefits and reduce transfers.

According to him, during the processing, ASG will also propose 400,000 euros for an ambulance in Valle Gran Rey, 250,000 for a basic life support ambulance in the midlands and 200,000 for the insular mental health unit. He will also demand financing for the Valle Gran Rey health center.

Ramos pointed out that these proposals will be raised in coordination with the Ministry and with the objective that the budgets respond to the daily needs of patients and students, wherever they live.
