Agulo recovers the memory of water, cereals and the vineyard with ‘Molinos del Tiempo’

Agulo recupera la memoria del agua, los cereales y la viña con ‘Molinos del Tiempo’

On October 30 and 31, the Agulo City Council will celebrate the first edition of Molinos del Tiempo: Wine, Water and Cereals with Rural Identity, a project created by the Regulatory Council of the Denomination of Origin Wines of La Gomera, which is developed within the framework of the Dinamiza Rural program. The proposal seeks to recover and disseminate the agricultural, ethnographic and gastronomic heritage of the municipality. For two days, the activities will allow you to learn about the historical relationship of Agulo with the use of water, the cultivation of cereals, the vineyard and the traditional knowledge that has marked the rural life of La Gomera.

The first day, scheduled for Friday, October 30, will begin at 5:00 p.m. at the Casa Azul with the presentation «Between springs, streams, cereals and vineyards. Agulo, historical review", by historian Rubén Martínez Carmona, who will address the historical relationship of the municipality with water, cereals, vineyards and the transformation of its agricultural landscape.

Subsequently, participants will move to the Piedra Gorda Winery, where "Roots of the land: tradition, wine and legacy" will take place. The visit will allow you to learn about the particularities of heroic viticulture, the effort of generations dedicated to the cultivation of vineyards and the importance of preserving this wine heritage.

The day will continue with "The memory of gofio: the secret of tradition", a workshop on making gofio nougat taught by Carmen Lola Plasencia Martín, which will recover a traditional recipe transmitted between generations. To close, there will be "Between wines and chords", a commented tasting of the wines from Bodega Piedra Gorda, directed by Nancy Melo and accompanied by live music by Regina Morales and Domingo Santos.

On Saturday, October 31, the activity will move to La Palmita, leaving at 9:30 a.m. from its plaza. Under the title "In the footsteps of water: threshing floors and mill of La Palmita", a heritage route will be carried out with Alcibiades García and Nancy Melo, which will allow you to discover the old spaces used for threshing grain and the mills that took advantage of the power of water for grinding.

The tour will highlight the importance that these infrastructures had in the rural economy of Agulo and their relationship with traditional forms of organization of agricultural work. The day will also include "Between eras and wines", a commented tasting directed by Nancy Melo in a traditional era of La Palmita, and "The sonorous memory of our land", dedicated to the chácaras and drums as an essential part of the musical heritage of La Gomera

The mayor of Agulo, Rosa Chinea, highlights that "with this third proposal of Dinamiza Rural we continue to give value to the resources and heritage of our municipality, after having developed two other activities that have allowed us to show different aspects of our rural wealth." The mayor emphasizes that "Agulo has a history closely linked to agriculture, water and the work of generations, and we want that legacy to also be an opportunity to boost the local economy, support the primary sector and publicize everything that our territory can offer."

For her part, the Councilor for Culture, Oriana Plasencia, points out that "we have prepared a proposal that combines history, heritage, gastronomy and traditional music, with the participation of people who know and keep our customs alive." The councilor highlights the importance of bringing these activities closer to the population and continuing to promote knowledge of local traditions.

The activities have limited places and require prior registration, which can be formalized through the following link: https://forms.gle/5dfDJtjN7YqS7Epv8. For more information, interested parties can contact us by calling 615 733 643.

This proposal, promoted by the Agulo City Council, is developed within the framework of Dinamiza Rural, an initiative of the Government of the Canary Islands, managed by GMR Canarias, aimed at municipalities with less than 10,000 inhabitants and aimed at promoting the primary sector, boosting the rural economy and highlighting local productions.
