Melodie Mendoza (ASG): “The law of Social Equality and Non-Discrimination will allow us to fight against transphobia”

The president of the Gomera Socialist Group Parliamentary Group highlights the consensus reached by all groups
The president of the Gomera Socialist Group Parliamentary Group (ASG), Melodie Mendoza, has shown her support for the development of the future Law on Social Equality and Non-Discrimination based on Gender Identity, Gender Expression and Sexual Characteristics, whose bill was registered this week in the Parliament of the Canary Islands.
“This is a rule that benefits the entire society, which is one more step towards ending transphobia, since this law includes, among other aspects, sanctions for those who do not comply,” highlighted the deputy. "With this law we guarantee a decent future for this group; enough of so much suffering, rejection and intolerance," he added.
The ASG representative in Parliament stated that “citizens have to learn that behind every gesture of transphobia there are people with immense suffering, caused by society itself.”
For the president of the Gomera Socialist Group Parliamentary Group, this new text is "exemplary, due to the consensus reached by the group itself; it is a law that reaches the Chamber created from the bottom up, which has been drafted by the group itself, who are really the ones who know and live this reality on a daily basis."
Mendoza argued that the previous regulations on this matter, which dates back to 2014, have fallen short, so a new law is needed. “It is true that it is incomprehensible that in order for there to be respect for diversity we have to approve laws, but if with this new norm we manage to improve the lives of each of them, it will have been worth it,” he stated.
