La Gomera develops an environmental education program for schoolchildren through the Cabildo

Through the REAG Program – La Gomera Environmental Educational Network – training workshops are given at the Primary and Secondary levels on environmental protection, recycling and proper use of water, air and soil.

The Cabildo of La Gomera, through the Environment Unit, develops the REAG Program – Environmental Educational Network of La Gomera – aimed at training Primary and Secondary schoolchildren on the island in environmental matters and conservation of the natural environment. This is an initiative that aims to disseminate information, for training purposes, about the Plánta-te project, the prevention and extinguishing of fires, or waste management.

The island president, Casimiro Curbelo, explained that one of the main objectives pursued by this program is the development of recreational and creative activities that contribute to building attitudes of commitment to the natural environment of the island, especially at an early age, thus incorporating the school and civil society in the solution of environmental problems.

“From the Island Council we are committed to training as a strategic instrument to raise awareness about the importance of caring for the natural environment and fighting climate change, through a multitude of actions that involve recycling and the correct management of waste or the restoration of degraded habitats, all in the interest of preserving the natural environment that makes our island a unique and exceptional place,” added Curbelo.

For his part, the island's Environment Minister, Héctor Cabrera, highlighted the importance of this program focused on promoting, through workshops, issues such as recycling, cleaning and caring for green areas in school centers and communities, and the promotion of the rational and appropriate use of water, air and soil.

The achievement of these informative workshops, which carry out their activity in primary and secondary schools on the island, aim to position environmental education as a tool to prevent, reduce, control and reverse the processes of school environmental deterioration, promoting the generation of innovative educational materials to develop knowledge, attitudes, skills and values that promote actions aimed at protecting the environment and improving the quality of life.
