The Plaza de la Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de La Asunción, in San Sebastián de La Gomera, will host tomorrow, Sunday, September 6, starting at 6:30 p.m., the Institutional Act of the LXV edition of the Columbian Days, which this year is celebrated under the motto 'In the footsteps of History'.
The event constitutes one of the main meetings of the Colombian programming and will have as its central axis a reflection on the value of democracy and the need to know and preserve historical memory as fundamental elements to strengthen freedom, coexistence and dialogue in the face of the challenges of today's society.
The official conference will be given by Francisco Etxeberria Gabilondo, doctor of Medicine and advisor to the Secretariat of State for Democratic Memory of the Government of Spain, whose career is closely linked to the study of historical memory and the recovery and preservation of testimonies essential for knowledge of the past.
His intervention will allow us to bring to the stage of the Columbian Days a reflection on the role that memory plays in democratic societies and the importance of knowing the events of the past to understand the present and move towards models of coexistence based on respect, freedom and human rights.
The day will begin with the signing of the Book of Honor by the speaker, followed by the traditional raising of flags and the interpretation of the official anthems. Subsequently, tribute will be paid to those who died at sea, emigrants and immigrants, maintaining the spirit of memory and brotherhood that characterizes this solemn act.
