Government and councils work together for Culture

At the regional level, work is being done on a line of aid for canceled activities, including the regional performing arts and music circuit.

The Government of the Canary Islands and the island councils have decided to work in a coordinated manner to help alleviate the negative consequences that the current health crisis has on the Canarian cultural ecosystem.  The Deputy Minister of Culture, Juan Márquez, held today, Monday the 23rd, a meeting via telematics with those responsible for this same area in the island councils, in which it was agreed to promote a series of consensual actions and measures.

Juan Márquez stated that for all those present "culture is an essential service and must be considered as a right and not as a luxury, a right of citizens. For this reason, we agreed to work in a united and coordinated manner so that the mistakes of the past are not committed this time and that Culture is not relegated compared to other areas. Because we are going to need its potential in innovation and creativity."

At the regional level, work is already underway on a first call for aid that will be allocated to those cultural activities that have been canceled in this alert period, also including activities scheduled in the regional music and performing arts circuit and that have been postponed to other dates. For their part, the councils will also contribute with their own aid for the sector, although it will be done in a coordinated manner with the Government so that the efforts undertaken by the different administrations do not overlap.

Likewise, instructions have been given to the public company Canarias Cultura en Red so that its Cultural Sector Support Office centralizes from now on all the information and measures adopted by each public administration and to which the sector can benefit at both the island, regional or state level. On this single website, all the decrees and regulations that have been approved during this emergency situation will also be available, as well as a guide with questions and answers to clear up doubts.

At the meeting held today, everyone agreed on the need to establish a virtual coordination table that will meet every Monday to monitor all processes and adopt new actions until this situation is overcome.

This meeting was attended by the general director of Culture, Rubén Pérez, the island directors of Tenerife, Leopoldo Santos, and Gran Canaria, Francisco Bravo, as well as the councilors Tatiana Brito (El Hierro), Jovita Monterrey (La Palma), Rosa Elena García (La Gomera), Andrés Briansó (Fuerteventura) and Alberto Aguiar (Lanzarote).
