Government, Cabildo and town councils plan the land session for public housing in La Gomera

This Thursday, the Cabildo of La Gomera hosted a meeting between the director of the Canary Islands Housing Institute, María Isabel Santana, and the president of the Institution, Casimiro Curbelo, who were accompanied by municipal representatives and members of Visocan, to address demands regarding the construction and rehabilitation of public housing.

The island president, Casimiro Curbelo, pointed to the opportunity that this planning opens for the creation of public housing on the island, incorporating the land proposed by the municipalities. Along these lines, he considered that the approach presented during the meeting opens the door to stopping the population loss suffered by the western islands, which together with their high aging rates "constitute one of the main challenges for the future."

He recalled that in the last decade no homes of this type have been built, which is why he urged the measures to be speeded up. “We are addressing this reality from responsibility and cooperation with all the administrations involved, so that we can materialize the projects in the shortest possible time,” he stated.

The director of the Canary Islands Housing Institute, María Isabel Santana, made this visit with the aim of analyzing the housing needs of the island and working with the mayors on the demands of each municipality. At this meeting, the transfer of land by the municipalities of Alajeró, Hermigua and San Sebastián de La Gomera began, being one of the lines of work outlined at the meeting, highlighting the possibility that "each municipality makes land available to the Autonomous Community to be able to begin building in accordance with the requests", as Santana has reported.

The registry of public housing applicants has also been analyzed and work has been done on the rehabilitation lines “which are very important lines, which are present in the Pact for Decent Housing in the Canary Islands, and which on this Island have great relevance due to the age of the homes.”

The Minister of Public Works, Transportation and Housing, Sebastián Franquis, previously agreed to work together with the Colombian institutions, on an official visit to the island, to analyze the situation in this area and study various proposals that are framed in both public and private housing.
