The spokesperson for the Parliamentary Group of the Gomera Socialist Group, Casimiro Curbelo, points out that the Canarian Government is working on a decree to address this reality. The spokesperson for the Parliamentary Group of the Gomera Socialist Group (ASG), Casimiro Curbelo, has defended today, the 11th, the need to promote actions to control the damage caused by feral animals in the natural environment. Likewise, he expressed his concern about this condition, since, in his opinion, "the damage caused by these species is irreparable." The ASG spokesperson in the regional Chamber explained that this problem has worsened as a result of the drought, "since these animals leave the coastal areas and ascend to other areas with greater vegetation and, where appropriate, they approach bordering areas of the national parks, as is the case of La Gomera." “With current methods, around 1,500 head of cattle are eradicated per year, but the reproduction rate is much higher, since those more than 5,000 feral animals increase rapidly,” said Curbelo. Likewise, he assured that due to this increase "it is essential to look for other tools to control this reality that affects all the Islands, also taking into account the sensitivities of animal rights groups." In this sense, Curbelo recalled that the Canarian Government is working on drafting a decree that provides for the expansion of the species included in hunting, considering goats and sheep as large game. "We know that the regional Executive, through the Ministry of Ecological Transition, Fight against Climate Change and Territorial Planning, is working on this decree that we consider very necessary, since feral animals cause serious damage to both the environment, the primary sector and heritage and ethnographic values," he indicated.

More than 200 secondary school students from La Gomera benefit from the initiative

Role-playing games and augmented reality are the teaching resources with which the Island Council of La Gomera and the MAPFRE Guanarteme Foundation will train the island's schoolchildren on the importance of foresight and savings as protection measures against possible economic risks.

Both institutions collaborate in this initiative to raise awareness among the island's students about such important concepts as family economics, entrepreneurship and risk prevention.

The Minister of Education Rosa Elena García, accompanied by the coordinator of the prevention area of the MAPFRE Guanarteme Foundation, Laura Ojeda, presented the Financial Education workshop “Future Mission” this morning at the CEO Mario Lhermet, in the municipality of Hermigua.

These workshops offer young participants tools so that they can develop with full autonomy and information, learn to manage the money available and understand the need to always have a surplus to deal with unforeseen events, among other important issues for their future.

Rosa Elena García, counselor in the area of Education, Culture, Sports, Youth and Historical Heritage, Social Policy and Equality, highlighted during the presentation the usefulness of these training sessions and the degree of awareness they achieve in the little ones. In this sense, he recalled that this is not the only training action carried out with the Foundation that already does it in other aspects such as road safety.

For her part, Laura Ojeda, coordinator of the Prevention and Dissemination area of the MAPFRE Guanarteme Foundation, stressed that "it is important to acquire these skills from an early age, because this way young people will be more prepared to face situations that involve investment, saving or spending in the near future and at the same time, they will be able to make decisions that entail risks."

It is estimated that around 200 first and second secondary school students from all schools on the island will participate in the workshop this week.
