The Government of the Canary Islands and the Cabildo of La Gomera coordinate the rehabilitation of Alojera beach

El Gobierno de Canarias y el Cabildo de La Gomera coordinan la rehabilitación de la playa de Alojera

The vice president of the Government of the Canary Islands, Manuel Domínguez, held a meeting with the president of the Cabildo of La Gomera, Casimiro Curbelo, to analyze the situation of the Alojera beach rehabilitation project and the necessary procedures to advance its development.

Both administrations have been collaborating for months in preparing the technical work necessary to address this action. In this framework, the Cabildo of La Gomera is preparing the specifications to contract the drafting of the project to stabilize the slopes of this area of the Vallehermoso coast.

Domínguez explained that the stabilization of the slopes constitutes an essential prior action to address the rehabilitation of the beach, as it is a condition established by the General Directorate of Coasts due to the risk of landslides. “Before proposing any intervention to recover the beach, it is necessary to have a project that allows evaluating and resolving the safety conditions of the environment,” he noted.

Curbelo, for his part, emphasized the relevance that this previous action will have in order to respond to a historical demand from the entire western area of La Gomera. In this sense, he explained that now the insular institution will put out to tender the drafting of the project to have the document available as soon as possible and to be able to advance in the materialization of the stabilization of slopes. “The unity of public administrations is fundamental in actions of this type that have great administrative complexity,” he concluded.

The current problem in Alojera is related to an infrastructure built in the late 1980s with the purpose of promoting the permanence of sand throughout the year. However, the configuration of that action and the subsequent storms caused the loss of the breakwater, with an effect opposite to that initially planned, to the point that the beach currently lacks sand.

The meeting made it possible to address the status of the preparatory work and the coordination between both administrations to continue with the necessary technical procedures, before studying the possible actions aimed at the recovery of this space on the Gomero coast.
