The president of the Cabildo of La Gomera, Casimiro Curbelo, proposed, this Thursday, that the Canary Islands lead the construction of the Port of Fonsalía for commercial, sports and fishing use. This announcement was made at a meeting with representatives of the Provincial Federation of Construction Entities (FEPECO), held in the south of Tenerife, a place where he demanded, once again, a firm response that unblocks a project that has been in force for more than two decades.
“It makes no sense that we have been waiting for 22 years for a solution without anyone acting,” said the Gomero leader during his speech, in which he insisted on the creation of a dialogue with all the administrations involved in which the steps to be taken are coordinated to avoid further delays. “From the Cabildo we would be willing to participate in this body in which the State, the Government of the Canary Islands, the Cabildo of Tenerife and the City Council of Guía de Isora should also be present,” he explained.
He explained that the latest news that exists about the project indicates that the State has insisted on not being competent in its execution, leaving it in the hands of the regional Executive. “This has been the response given to the senator for La Gomera, Fabián Chinea, to the question asked in the Upper House,” he indicated.
Curbelo regretted the change in criteria that the different State governments have had "which have not managed to advance in this project that would end the collapse that Los Cristianos is suffering and, consequently, the growth limitations for maritime traffic that connects with the islands of La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro." Regarding this, he stressed that this port would be “the backbone of the green islands and the only formula to optimize maritime connections between them.”
Evolution of Christians
The traffic of this port has tripled in 30 years of service. The Port of Los Cristianos handles more than 1.8 million passengers and more than 443 thousand vehicles per year, “figures that corroborate the deficiencies and urgency of undertaking the construction of the new port, because not only is the port space small, but the 5 kilometers that separate it from the highway become endless, taking more than an hour to get there.”
