The Gomero runner Cristofer Clemente becomes an ambassador of the island with the sponsorship of the Biosphere Reserve
The president of the Cabildo, Casimiro Curbelo, highlights that the athlete will make the natural charms of the Island known throughout the world.
Making his way at almost insurmountable altitudes or tracing routes that few humans are capable of facing, this is how Cristofer Clemente can be defined: a Gomero of excellence. A young man who opted for sport, embarked on a path of barriers and set his sights on the mountains, those that have made him savor the sweet victories achieved in the national Ultra Skyrunners championship or the World Series of this modality.
Any beginning is not usually easy, but Clemente seemed to have it clear when he registered for the first time in the Meridiano Marathon and won it in 2011. Since then he has been the champion of a meteoric career, full of perseverance, effort and merits, in which his land, La Gomera, has always had a prominent space, because as he defines well: “it is my playground.”
Last week, the Cabildo of La Gomera announced that Clemente will carry the image of the Biosphere Reserve in its next competitions. A sponsorship that, according to what he says, "is more than just carrying the name of the island. It is being able to bring to the world the place where I live and where I train. A point that many ask about because, without a doubt, it is a true treasure." With these words he reaffirms himself as ambassador of his island in nearly a dozen events that he attends in the next eleven months in countries as diverse as Mexico, Austria, France, Germany and South Africa.
The treasure that La Gomera keeps is represented, to a large extent, by the more than 600 kilometers of trails that surround it. Much of this surface is the training space chosen by Clemente, who knows very well the multiple routes that he takes as experiences to face the sports events in which he participates. "The island is an ideal place for preparation. The slopes, its landscapes and the weather conditions are unbeatable," he says.
This season the athlete wears the logo of the Biosphere Reserve, an emblem that recognizes the island in its colors and shapes. Since UNESCO declared it as such in 2012, the path of conservation and sustainability has been addressed in the strategy to disseminate its particularities. The island president, Casimiro Curbelo, insists on strengthening sponsorship measures of this type, “which represent many of the values we have as an island and brings us closer to thousands of people who participate or watch these sports competitions.”
Curbelo values the opportunity that Clemente opens, since "this runner will make the natural values of our land known throughout the world, something that he handles perfectly, since the island is the setting for his training." Furthermore, the island president highlights the efforts of this athlete and encourages him to continue achieving success and overcoming barriers, as he has done until now.
