Alejandro García presents a motion on the removal of asbestos in Vallehermoso

The councilor and spokesperson for the mixed group in the Vallehermoso City Council registered a motion last Tuesday, February 4, for inclusion in the ordinary March plenary session.

The motion that had been presented previously deals with the creation of an inventory and map of municipal asbestos so that its removal can be carried out and the waste can be used appropriately. "The uralite was used quite frequently during the 70s and 80s in our municipality. There are many spaces that must be inventoried and its removal must be proceeded to avoid exposure to the public and that could put people's health at risk," says the councilor.

Among the agreements proposed by the motion is the training of City Hall employees, as well as companies and neighbors so that they know how to act in these cases. In addition to this, it proposes January 1, 2028 as the date for the Municipality to remove asbestos, a date that requires an EU resolution.

In addition, the motion includes as agreements the preparation of an ordinance that regulates construction licenses for plots likely to have asbestos, as well as the involvement of all administrations, from the City Council to the State Government.

García Vera recalls "currently in the educational facilities in the center of Vallehermoso there is an asbestos cover, not only in the classrooms but also in the pavilion, this being more serious because it does not even have a layer of cement to isolate it. We should not wait any longer and it is essential that all administrations, both local and regional, assume this reality, which can pose a serious risk to the health and, even more so, to our little ones."

The spokesperson for the mixed group understands that the motion seeks to improve the public health of the municipality and ensure that asbestos elements are removed throughout the municipality, especially in the most sensitive places. "We will continue to promote initiatives that benefit Vallehermoso and the island as a whole. We cannot ignore the serious public health problems that asbestos can cause," concludes García Vera.
